Law
Enforcement Post #177
The
Elm Grove Police Explorer post provides opportunities for young men and women,
between the ages of 14 to 21, who are interested in learning more about a career
in law enforcement.
Our explorer post is a combined effort between the Elm Grove Police
Department and the Boy Scouts of America.
Elm
Grove Police Explorer Post #177 was first organized by
Police Chief Earl D. Krueger in 1973.
Since the establishment of the post, there have been approximately 40
explorers from the Elm Grove Police explorer post who have gone on to become
successful members of various law enforcement agencies, including local and
federal law enforcement agencies.
Our current captains, Captain Moulas and Captain Gage, began their law
enforcement careers with the Elm Grove Explorer Post.
The
Elm Grove Police Explorers meet once a month to discuss issues and events of
youth and law enforcement interest.
Also during these meetings, the explorers receive training in a vast
array of police topics.
Just a few of these topics include: traffic accident investigation,
traffic stops, Operating While Intoxicated incidents, report writing, crime
scene investigations, defensive and arrest tactics, room clearing tactics, and
demonstrations by our K-9 officer.
We also have the opportunity to have presentations by members of other
law enforcement agencies, such as the Secret Service, gang investigators, drug
unit officers, and members of a S.W.A.T. team.
There are also annual police explorer competitions where members of our
explorer post compete with members of explorer posts from other departments in
various police related events.
The
Elm Grove Police Explorers also have the opportunity to be involved in various
activities at the Elm Grove Police Department:
Dispatch
Program:
Explorers are instructed in the use of police radios and in the
critical role of public safety dispatching.
Court
Bailiff Program:
Explorers are provided the opportunity to assist the Clerk of Court
during sessions of Municipal Court in the Village of Elm Grove.
The Explorer learns about the court system and the disposition of
violations of law.
Traffic
Control:
Explorers are involved in assisting with traffic direction at assigned
posts where traffic control is needed for special events, such as the Memorial
Day parade.
Squad
Riding:
After meeting several training requirements, Explorers are allowed to
ride along with an officer on patrol during a normal shift to give the
Explorers first hand experience in the field of law enforcement.
Special
Activities:
Explorers also assist with various activities held in the village park
such as Forth of July events and other miscellaneous police activities.
Underage
Alcohol Investigations:
Explorers assist in checking compliance of alcohol laws by attempting
to purchase alcohol at businesses with liquor licenses. This work is
completed while under the direct
supervision of a police officer.
