Swim Lessons

The Village of Elm Grove follows the structure of the American Red Cross Swim Program. To help you select the appropriate class, please use the levels that are described below. If a Child is registered for the wrong class, transfers will be made only on a space availability basis. Please do not sign children up for classes they have not passed into, as they may not be prepared. Do not anticipate your child’s progression to the next level if registering for multiple sessions. This helps both the instructor and the swimmer.

Note-

Contact the Recreation Department at 782-6700 or 782-6940 (after June 10th) for information.

To avoid distracting the children during the classes, parents will not be allowed in the pool area.

Wading pool is NOT open during lesson time.

Course Description

Tots - Parent/Child (Ages 2 - 4) - This class is designed to build swimming readiness by emphasizing fun in the water.  Parents and children participate in several guided practice sessions that help children learn elementary skills including water entry, bubble blowing, front kicking, back floating, underwater exploration, and more.  Once children can perform basic skills without parental assistance, they may begin the Learn-to-Swim program.

Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills (Ages 4 - 6) - The purpose of this class is to help students feel comfortable in the water.  Course content: basic water safety rules, using a life jacket, submerging mouth, nose, and eyes, opening eyes underwater and picking up a submerged object, swimming on front and back using arm and leg actions, recognizing a swimmer in distress and getting help, exhaling underwater, and floating on front and back.

Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills - Students must have passed Level 1.  The purpose of the class is to give students success with fundamental skills.  Course content: moving in the water while wearing a life jacket, submerging entire head, front and back glide, treading water using arm and leg motions, bobbing in water, jellyfish float, and swimming using combined stroke on front and back.

Level 3: Stroke Development - Students must have passed Level 2.  The purpose of the class is to build on the skills in Level 2 by providing additional guided practice.  Course content: reaching assist, submerging and retrieving an object, front and back glide, front and back crawl, kneeling or standing dive, rotary breathing, survival float, and butterfly kick and body motion.

Level 4: Stroke Improvement - Students must have passed Level 3.  The purpose of the class is to develop confidence in the strokes learned and improve other aquatic skills.  Course content: safe diving rules, dive from stride position or shallow dive, survival float, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, throwing assist, feet-first surface dive, and front and back crawl.

Level 5: Stroke Refinement - Students must have passed Level 4.  The purpose of the class is to provide further coordination and refinement of strokes.  Course content: survival swimming, standing dive, open turns on front and back, front and back crawl, performing rescue breathing, tuck surface dive and pike surface dive, front flip turn and backstroke flip turn, elementary backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke, and sidestroke.

Level 6: Swimming and Skill Proficiency - Students must have passed Level 5.  This class refines the strokes so students swim them with ease, efficiency, power, and smoothness over greater distances.  Level 6 is designed to prepare students to participate in more advanced courses.

Private Swim Lessons:

Fee $15.00 per half hour for residents, $17.00 per half hour for non-residents

Individual swim lessons by WSI trained lifeguards are offered as an alternative to group lessons. Sign up for private swim lessons will begin at summer registration. Once signed up, arrangements for private lessons may be made with the individual instructor through the Recreation Department. The instructor will call to schedule lessons on an agreeable time and date, starting with the first person on the sign-up list. Payment for private lessons will be due at the beginning of the week for all of the week’s scheduled lessons.

Please choose schedules with instructors wisely. The instructors get paid on a per lesson basis; cancellations without payment result in instructors not getting paid. Cancellations must be received more than 24 hours in advance. Lessons canceled less than 24 hours in advance will still be assessed the entire fee to compensate instructors for their time. Should an instructor need to cancel, the lesson will be rescheduled with no penalty to the swimmer.
