Emergency Sirens | By-pass pump installation |
Trick or Treat | Memorial
Day Note: The most recent items are listed at the end. Emergency Siren SystemThe Village installed a new emergency siren system in August 2000. Our system was designed to blanket our relatively confined area, addressing significant geographic and foliage challenges. We didn't want to waste power (and expense) by unnecessarily exceeding our borders, nor did we want sirens so powerful as to create deafening volume to residents near the installations.
Constant monitoring is provided by the computerized system control. Currently, we conduct a "growl" test at 12 Noon on Saturdays (which are not audible to the community), and the full 1-minute tornado siren test at Noon on Wednesdays April through September as per National Weather Service guidelines. A second tornado test will be conducted on Saturdays at Noon and will last for one minute. The Saturday test was conducted at 6:00 PM until recently when the Public Safety Chair modified the schedule to accommodate local church services. Our outdoor siren warning system is now complete and performing satisfactorily. In Spring 2001, we are in a much better position to alert residents to potential danger than we were a year ago. Sewer Diversion Pumps Are Now Complete! Construction work on the new sewer diversion pumps located at Briaridge Court and Wrayburn Road is now complete and operational. The April rains put the pumps to the test and they performed properly. The new pumps will take the place of the portable pumps manned by the Public Works staff during periods of intense rain. These pumps discharge sewerage into an underground sewer pipe leading to the larger collector sewer. This will eliminate sewer overflows which previously discharged to local drainage ditches. These pump stations activate automatically when the threshold level is reached thereby preventing sewer backups before they occur. Gallons of sewerage diverted, maintenance, flow points and flow times are electronically transmitted and monitored at the Village Hall. Both pumps also have an individual backup power generator in the event of a power outage along with an automatic calling alarm system that transmits messages to the police department and Public Works Director. These areas will now be less susceptible to sanitary sewer backups during heavy rain flows! During 1999 and continuing in 2000 the Village began to implement storm water management improvements recommended by the SEWRPC plan. In 1999 the Village enlarged drainage culverts at Victoria Circle and Verdant Drive. During June on 2000 work will begin on Pilgrim Parkway to raise the road between Cascade Drive and Pilgrim Park Middle School. This project will provide a level road elevation above the floodplain and more efficient drainage in order to eliminate overland flooding in that area.
