Dear Village Resident:

Again we are plagued with an abundance of gypsy moth in the Village. In cooperation with Wisconsin’s Department of Natural Resources gypsy moth suppression program, this letter serves as notification of the Villages intent to participate in that program. Your residence is either located in a treatment block or a buffer zone around a treatment block. (See attached map for treatment areas.) At this point in time all blocks have been approved; however, there may be some modification in some blocks due to an endangered species near us in another community.

A Village wide egg mass survey was conducted in the fall of last year, which provided the information on the heaviest, infested areas of the Village. The subdivisions listed may be partially or completely sprayed.

The spray area for 2004 for the village includes:

Northwest Portion

Elmdale Estates

Jolenta Estates

Pinecrest

Elm Grove Highlands

Brojanview

Stratford

North Brook

Club Estates

Hill Crest

Saratoga Estates

Low flying aircrafts will spray with Bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki (Btk, the active ingredient is a naturally occurring soil bacterium). The spraying would occur in mid-May through the beginning of June. This procedure will begin as early as 5:15 a.m. and is dependent on the progress of the moth’s life cycle.

When we have a start date we will notify the local media and use the Village’s website and cable station to notify the residents. You can call this toll free number in May to learn when we plan to begin spraying (1-800-642-moth) 1-800-642-6684.

Our goal is not to eradicate the moth, but to keep levels low enough to cause as little damage as possible. As part of an effective overall management plan all Village residents are encouraged to use a variety of non-pesticide methods to curb this insect. Information detailing these control strategies can be obtained from the Forestry Department at the Village Hall and on the Village website at www.elmgrovewi.org.

There will be a public informational meeting to explain the program on Tuesday, February 10, 2004 at 6:00 p.m. in the Municipal Courtroom, Brookfield Public Safety Building, 2100 North Calhoun Road, Brookfield, WI 53005.

If you request that your property not be sprayed, you must contact your municipal coordinator. Ron Hill, Elm Grove Village Forester at 782-6700 before the deadline for objections, which is February 21, 2004.

Enclosed please find additional gypsy moth information, a list of most commonly asked questions and a website where more information is available.
