HOUSEHOLD Hazardous WasteGenerally, waste is considered hazardous if it is ignitable (i.e. burns readily), corrosive, or reactive (e.g. explosive). Waste may also be considered hazardous if it contains certain toxic chemicals. Most hazardous products are labeled with key words to identify them. Some of the signal words are Caution, Warning, Danger, Poison, Flammable, Combustible, and Corrosive. Some typical household hazardous wastes include: gasoline, insecticides, herbicides and pesticides; oil-based paints, stains, thinners, strippers, and solvents; as well as some household cleaners and chemicals. Waukesha County operates three permanent household hazardous wastes collection sites for residents. New Recycling Bins delivered to residents so they can Recycle MoreCounty, communities and collection companies cooperate to increase recycling Residents in the Elm Grove area will begin receiving free blue recycling bins in the next few weeks. The contracted collection company, Veolia Environmental Services, is distributing bins to households with cracked, broken, or missing bins. Included will be a Residential Recycling Guide explaining the items that can be recycled and how to set them out. The old damaged bins will be picked up and recycled. The county is providing the bins free in order to help communities increase recycling participation. According to Karen Fiedler, who manages the county recycling program, “We want to make sure every household has a recycling bin and knows what to put in it. We haven’t done a large-scale distribution of bins since the curbside recycling program began in the early 90’s. The new bin will remind residents to participate and they will have the information they need to help save landfill space and cost. With people being very concerned about taxes, I hope they understand that they are throwing away revenue when they throw away recyclables!” If you need a second bin for the amount of recyclables you have, come to Village Hall to pick one up. For further information on recycling, household hazardous waste, tips on yard waste management, and special item disposal, visit www.waukeshacounty.gov/recycling or call 262-896-8300. Other areas of the county will be starting this program soon.
